Speed Governors For Habitual Speeders...Sounds Like A Good Idea
Ever since COVID, Route 1 into the city, has become a drag strip
Here is an article on the WTOP website, from April 23, 2026.
The Maryland legislature passed a bill that is waiting for Governor Wes Moore’s signature. It would create a program that would install speed governors on habitual offenders' cars, that are facing license suspension or revocation, for frequent and/or extreme speeding violations. It would limit the speed that the car could go to the posted speed limit. It would be similar to the interlock devise that is used for DUI offenders. Limiting the cars’ speed to the posted limit, would require GPS tracking. Oh my, an invasion of my privacy! So what? You have a cell phone don’t you? Everywhere you go is being tracked anyway, even if the phone is off.
Route 1 from Hyattsville to the DC line, and then down Route 1/Rhode Island Avenue in DC, has become a sea of reckless drivers. Besides the red light runners, you have drivers that are exceeding the posted limit, which is 25 mph, by my guestimate doing 50-60 mph, give or take an mph. I’ve seen pedestrians almost getting run over, on more than one occasion.
I have yet to see any Suburbans or minivans driving recklessly. The cars that I’ve seen driving recklessly, have been some pickup trucks, and various brands of muscle cars, with loud mufflers, and blacked out windows. I’ve even seen a few that were painted flat primer black, so the car wouldn’t reflect light. You have a segment of society, that believes society’s rules don’t apply to them. I hate to tell them, those rules apply to all of us. I have no problem using speed control devices to “remind” them of that fact.
Do you want to avoid a speeding ticket, both camera and cop? Don’t speed. It’s that simple. You don’t need to be a rocket scientist to figure that one out. As far as the drivers that have over $100,000 in tickets, go after them and make them either pay, or give up their license. I wonder if a Maryland driver racking up over $100K in outstanding camera tickets in DC, can be prosecuted for committing a crime across state lines. That would put it in Federal territory. Memo to Mayor Bowser: Explore all options. Getting dangerous drivers off the road, benefits everyone, including other drivers.
Memo to Governor Moore: Sign the damn bill!

Hahahaha, so what happens when they install a “cheat/defeat device” purchased inexpensively online? Or just drive a different car? They will then be able to resume speeding at will; this is a personal behavior issue. Put them in jail or revoke their licenses depending on the level of their habitual traffic offending. We don’t need new laws; we need aggressive enforcement and ADJUDICATION of the ones already on the books. This law would do nothing if the judges keep letting the offender skate.
I agree with all of this. Habitual offenders are a danger to everyone else on the road. Time to reign in the bad behavior.
